Navajeevan Educational and Welfare Society, known as NEWS, is dedicated to the cause of upliftment of the rural and uneducated people through welfare measures and education. It has been rendering notable social service for the past 20 years and was formed in Thiruthangal, Virudhunagar district. It was registered on 08-06-1989(40/1989). A Residential School, with inclusive education programme, Evening Tuition centres for the dropouts, Child Development Centres in Madurai and Sivakasi, The Teacher Training Institute (D.T.Ed) , B.Ed college, Arts and science college in Kannirajapuram, Ramanathapuram district have been established by NEWS, since its inception.
It is with the aim of realizing the dreams of the exemplary parents Thiyagi D.Dharmakkan (a veteran freedom –fighter and a dynamic leader) and Tmty. Amirtham (an equally committed social-worker),a great visionary couple who wanted to bring about 100% literacy among the children and particularly girls of Kannirajapuram, these institutions are named after them. Initially, as a first venture Thiyagi Dharmakkan Amirtham Institute of Teacher training (D.T.Ed) was started in 2007 with an intake of 50 students. This is affiliated to DTERT, Chennai and DIET, Manchur, Ramanathapuram (Dt)The next educational endeavor was the establishment of B.Ed College in 2009,in Kannirajapuram with the motto of ‘Empowerment through education’. This is affiliated to Tamilnadu Teachers Education University, Chennai.
